Kiaat & Anna – new painting

So i finally got up the energy to start this painting that i’ve been contemplating for a while. It’s from a photo of my son and niece at my fathers house, both  looking very contemplative (and still, which they most definitely aren’t usually). I like that there is a lot of ’empty’ space, the wall behind them, and i’m looking forward to the texture and colour i can create there. It could be challenging, but a good combination of space and pure paint as well as two portraits. I started loosely, freehand, even my reference lines are pretty skew, but i finally got the composition almost right.

I felt that the door frame line coming out from Kiaat’s head was too weird, so although i like that dark space in the photograph, i’ve taken it out here for now (may work it back in later).

Looked at reference pic and realised K was too large in comparison to Anna so although i liked his proportions i made him shorter, and struggled to get that nice form back.

So there we go, back at it, wish me luck!
