argyroderma – new painting begins!

I have an old square canvas (50/50cm) that has had a sketchy drawing on it for years….so i finally washed over it with white and bravely started in on this argyroderma. I have an obsession with succulents (South Africa being the perfect place to be for plant diversity!) and our iphoto is chock full of photo’s from various trips just begging to be painted/printed. This one was taken in the glass house at Kirstenbosch Gardens. So i make a start with burnt umber, viridian green, indian yellow, pthalo blue and magenta. I may have rubbed it down too much, deadened it a bit, but i’m mostly trying to get the composition correct. I think this is going to be fun, and i’m thinking of getting a few on the go at the same time to satisfy my impatience and to get away from the fiddliness of that last painting (which i’m still busy with!!)
